How it works:

High Desert Native Plants, along with Keystone Her High Desert Native Plants, along with Keystone Heritage Park, is lucky to have interns part of the PREE H2O program from UTEP and EPCC. Each intern works on a project, relevant to the work of their placement, to present at the COURI Symposium in July. Paola is specifically looking at rainwater harvesting as a means of water conservation. She is also surveying past HDNP clients on how well their Rainwater Harvesting Landscape Installation is working. During yesterday’s rainstorm, she was able to see this work in action from the curb cuts at Keystone Heritage Park!

Chihuahuan Desert/Texas native plant highlight: Te Chihuahuan Desert/Texas native plant highlight: Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora).
Our office sits across the parking lot of @keystoneheritagepark and we are often in the gardens and wetlands doing maintenance and restoration work. One of our employees, Syd, came across a blooming Texas Mountain Laurel today. Their flowers are a bright purple with a sweet aroma that remind you of grapes! They’re very attractive to pollinators, as you can see here!
The seeds of the TML are in a pod that look like peanuts and when you crack them open, they’re a beautiful crimson color. But be careful not to eat them! The seeds are toxic if ingested. They have been used in indigenous spiritual practices as a hallucinogenic agent, but we would not recommend trying that at home! Planting TMLs is a great way to attract birds and pollinators to your yard/garden though!
